An Indecent Play of Light & Geometry on 56th and 8th

New York New York – Ol’ Blue Eyes

15391313_10154847341136757_7812361030133281089_oI moved to New York City in 1986 yet sometimes I still enjoy it like a tourist.  You know the old joke about telling the tourists from the New Yorkers by who is looking up?  Well, I may be a New Yorker of more than 30 years but I still like looking up in awe, and sometimes I’ll start taking some “beauty shots” just for the fun of it.  Two-Fisted Touristing in my home town.  So it was while I walked up last evening past the Hearst Tower on 8th avenue and the corner of 56th Street.  The remarkable building, the first “green” high-rise office building completed in New York, rising from the preserved facade of the 1920’s Hearst building, and winner of 2006’s Emporis Skyscraper Award (“best skyscraper in the world completed that year!”), always catches my eye.  Today it caught the late afternoon sun nicely too, as did the surrounding buildings.  So I took a few pics of the upper delights all around the intersection and posted them on Facebook.

And promptly elicited this gutter minded comment…

Female Facebook Friend #1:  Just a little phallic?

Female Facebook Friend #1 didn’t specify, but I assume it was the above picture that elicited the comment.  I was about to protest “Really? Must we go there at the slightest…” and then I looked closely at the picture and realized she had a point, and more…

Me:  I saw geometry and light and perspective.  But now that you mention it… phallic is just the tip of the mid-level bodily allusions, I’m afraid…

Female Facebook Friend #2:  Just the tip.

Never mind the rising column with the head bathed in warm sunlight, what about the twin statuary at the base, the splayed limbs of the eaves, the triangular openings of steel and glass… I could go on but I better stop…

I swear I was just captivated by reflections and vectors and shapes and shadows at the time of taking these pics.  But the middle shot above, well I’ll never be able to look at that one innocently again…

And upon further reflection, some of the other pics are beginning to lose their innocence too…
